Is the hotel industry ignoring singlehood?

More and more adults, of all ages, choose singlehood or find themselves living alone. Financially independent and self-confident, they look to share quality time away with their friends or pursuing a hobby or special interest.

We know that during 2012 a third of all holidays were taken by single adults, but recent research indicates that the potential is even greater.

42% of all adults in the UK are single and this is set to grow further. But many singles feel under represented by mainstream travel industry marketing.

Images of happy families, smiling couples and packages tailored to non-singles appear to dominate and we think the opportunity to market travel and hotel solutions to the single adult has untapped potential. With one in five single-person households travelling solo for their last holiday, many in the over 65 age bracket and with disposable income, we think the industry could do more to take a share of this potential.

Targeting will be the key to success - understanding the needs and desires of single men and single women customers and the very different interests they enjoy. But the key lies in appreciating that single no longer equates to an unhappy and temporary state but is increasingly a chosen lifestyle or one that is embraced with pleasure, whatever your age or income.
