We celebrate seven decades of Dolly Parton

To celebrate Dolly Parton’s 70th Birthday, we’ve compiled some of her most wise and witty quotes - enjoy!

I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb... and I also know that I'm not blonde.

The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

My weaknesses have always been food and men - in that order.

I was the first woman to burn my bra - it took the fire department four days to put it out.

Find out who you are and do it on purpose.

You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try.

If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one.

Smile. It increases your face value.

Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

We can never direct the wind but we can adjust the sails.

The evolution of the Parton brand

2016 is a big year for birthdays. Bill Clinton, Sylvester Stallone, Diane Keaton, and of course Dolly Parton all reach the big 7-0 this year. Dolly is a singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist and theme park owner was born in a one-roomed cabin in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee in 1946.

The youngest of 12 children, she was already a local TV and radio star by the age of 10 and went on to become the most successful female country singers of all time. She has sold more than 100 million albums and had 25 number one singles including ‘Jolene’, ‘9 to 5’, and ‘I will always love you’. She married her husband Carl Dean in Nashville in 1966, and they have stayed together ever since.

Not only is she one of the hardest working women in the music industry she is also an instantly recognisable brand. Dolly “there is no such thing as natural beauty” Parton, would never be seen barefaced in public, heavy pink eyeshadow and a bright red lip is more her kind of thing. The "backwoods Barbie", as she refers to herself, is well known for her big, blonde hair, wide smile, and huge boobs. Her attitude to make up is simple and she's happy to admit the following rule: "You can do it in good taste, or if you want to look like the town tramp like me, you can."

Not everyone wants to look like the town “tramp”, and not everyone loves country music, but everyone knows Dolly. Unlike many celebrities Dolly has never tried to reinvent herself. She has never apologised or deviated from her personal brand and, with a little help from plastic surgeons she has looked the same for the last 50 years. In Dolly’s own words: "If I see something sagging, dragging or bagging, I get it sucked, tucked or plucked. It takes a lot of money to look as cheap as I look."

A recognisable brand is increasingly an important part of a successful business. Today, a strong brand is more important than ever. Some of the most successful such as Apple, Google, and Nike, are often the simplest. These brands don’t complicate what they do, what they stand for and what they offer.

Dolly hasn’t changed much over the year and we love her for it. It’s not just her unapologetically trashy and over the top image but her hard work, wit and wisdom for which she is well known and admired for. Happy Birthday Dolly!
